Bridge to Life Explained

AMG STARTS CHILDREN IN OUR PROGRAM AT 3 YEARS OF AGE.  OUR ULTIMATE OBJECTIVE

IS TO LEAD THEM LOVINGLY TOWARDS TWO GOALS:

o Restored image bearers of God.  Walking with Christ and serving Him.

o Purpose and vocation.  Able to serve others and provide for their families.

IN THE URBAN SLUMS OF GUATEMALA EXIST MANY BARRIERS TO DEVELOPMENT.  WE

SHOW THESE BARRIERS INSIDE OF A “RAVINE” APPROPRIATELY REPRESENTING THE

DRAMATIC TOPOGRAPHY WHERE MANY OF THE POOR LIVE THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY.

POWERFUL OBSTACLES OF VIOLENCE, GANGS, BROKEN FAMILIES, PHYSICAL & SEXUAL

ABUSE AND LACK OF OPPORTUNITY LIMIT THE POSSIBILITIES OF NORMAL DEVELOPMENT

          FOR MANY YOUNG PEOPLE.

WITHIN POST-CONFLICT COUNTRIES, COMING-OF-AGE YOUTH (13 OR SO YEARS) LACK LIFE

RESOURCES AND A CLEAR VISION OF THE FUTURE, WHICH WILL MOTIVATE THEM TO

CONTINUE WITH THEIR EDUCATION IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE PURPOSE, VOCATION AND

STABILITY IN EARLY ADULTHOOD.  FACT:  MANY YOUTH AT THIS AGE OPT FOR THE

FRATERNITY AND QUICK MONEY OF STREET GANGS TO FULFILL THEIR IMMEDIATE NEEDS.

THIS FACT ALONE CONTRIBUTES TO A LARGE PERCENTAGE OF THE VIOLENCE AND

SECURITY ISSUES PLAGUING COUNTRIES LIKE GUATEMALA.

o At 12 to 13 years old, youth become aware of their poverty, their desires (sexual, material, physical) and

want to do something about it.

o Youth at these ages are ashamed to participate in "social programs”.

o Youth begin leaving AMG and other’s programs and desertion rates climb.

o Impoverished youth do not have access to the many opportunities that exist for children of elite

                       Guatemalans:

                              • Premium high school education with strong leadership training, athletics and cultural programming

                              • Superior vocational and technical training

                              • University and Higher Education

                              • Connections to the job market

o Impoverished youth suffer a high level of abuse (Physical, sexual, economic, material) and do not have

access to counsel or restorative services/professionals

o Impoverished youth suffer trauma from living in the midst of violence, insecurity, broken families and the

                       harsh realities of poverty.

o AMG International invests in thousands of lives from the age of 3, only to lose many at the critical ages of

                       13 and up.

AMG’S PROGRAMS LEADING UP TO THESE AGES ARE FULFILLING MANY VITAL NEEDS BUT

ARE NOT PAINTING A CLEAR ENOUGH PICTURE OF THE FUTURE TO KEEP CHILDREN MOVING

          ACROSS THE BRIDGE TO LIFE.

THE KEY ELEMENTS THAT MAKE UP THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE BRIDGE TO LIFE ARE:

o Family – When families are unstable, alternatives need to be provided in order for normal development to

                        take place.

                    o Health

o Protection/Restoration – Unsafe or suffering children do not develop well.

                    o Education

                    o Discipleship

                    o Community

o Higher Education – opportunities for vocational and university level education

                    o Access to employment opportunities

AMG HAS A PRESENCE IN 30 COMMUNITIES IN GUATEMALA.  THIS PRESENCE MAKES US THE

PERFECT “BASE” OF THE BTL, THROUGH OUR CHILD SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM.

OUR DESIRE TO WALK CHILDREN FROM 3 YEARS OF AGE TO YOUNG ADULTHOOD REQUIRES

THAT WE TAKE ON THE RESPONSIBILITY OF BEING A FACILITATOR.  MOBILIZING LOCAL AND

INTERNATIONAL ACTORS TO FULFILL THE MANY ELEMENTS NECESSARY FOR ACHIEVING

THE DESIRED RESULTS…SERVING AS THE “BASE” OF THE BTL.

LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL ACTORS WILL HELP TO MAKE FUTURE PROGRAMMATIC

PROPOSALS MORE CREDIBLE AND OFFER THEIR EXPERTISE AND PROGRAMS AS PART OF

          OUR INTERVENTION APPROACHES.

EXISTING PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS RUN ACROSS THE TOP OF THE BTL DEPICTING THEIR

          SUPPORT OF THE STRATEGY.

SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS CAN THEN GIVE BACK TO THE ENTIRE PROCESS BY SHARING THEIR

TESTIMONIES, RESOURCES, CONNECTION TO EMPLOYMENT AND OTHER IMPORTANT

          CONTRIBUTIONS.
